Catherine Ezell

Instructor bio [+]

Catherine studied figure and portrait drawing and painting with master artists from The Art Students League of New York, The Boston Fenway Studios and the R.H. Ives Gammell School. Direct painting and drawing from life, and use of value and color are her technical strengths. The Copley Society, The Guild of Boston Artists, The Cambridge Art Association, and The Concord Art Association have represented her work in their juried shows and portrait registries. She teaches private art lessons in her studio and classes and workshops at local art centers. Her current course offerings at The Cambridge Center for Adult Education are in portrait and life drawing. Specializing in a representational painterly tradition, her work includes portraits from life, plein air landscapes and still life paintings. She accepts commissions from photographs as well, especially children and dogs. Her education includes an MA in American Literature and a BA in English Literature.

Aspiring representational artists will practice and strengthen their eye/hand coordination doing studies of high-quality reproductions from the newly reprinted publication of a 19th century French master's class. Their ultimate goal will be to complete a finely finished work from an actual cast drawing under the guidance of the instructor. The recent revival of the early training system of cast drawing emphasizes accuracy, solidity, and finish while the contemporary trend toward gesture and self-expression can lead to exaggeration and distortion of form. Students will alternate working from life models with working from plate reproductions from Gerald M. Ackerman's "Charles Bargue with the collaboration of Jean-Leon Gerome: Drawing Course." Limited to 14.
