Experimental Wood Finishing *NEW*

This class will give students a basic understanding of the finishing process. We will cover various aspects of wood finishing: Coloring wood with stains, chemical, and plant dyes, shellac, varnish, oils and their use in the finishing process. We will also explore shading and toning with tannic acid and how it reacts to different species of wood. Instructor: Jesse Shaw

Jesse Shaw

Jesse Shaw is a designer that draws on his years of experience as a furniture maker. Shaw began his training at the Center for Furniture Craftsmanship in Rockport ME, where he studied for two years under the tutelage of master craftsman that passed through the school. As a Graduate student at the Savannah College of Art and Design, Shaw immersed himself in design concepts, sustainability, innovative materials and techniques. Upon completion of his MFA, Jesse joined Currey and Company as a furniture designer, producing numerous works for production in factories around the world. In 2014, Shaw turned toward his passion for quality crafted furniture, devoting his attention to his company Spiral Furniture & Design, creating contemporary designs that combine a fluid aesthetic with functional form. He also works as a technical advisor and makes guest appearances on the WGBH television show "Rough Cut Woodworking with Tommy Mac.
