Color Theory Workshop

*If there is a preference for a certain brand, brush, paper, or other accessory, please use that instead. Don’t buy new items unless needed.

Gouache

Student Grade Brands: Winsor & Newton, Talens, Utrech, Faire Savoir

● Titanium White

● Cyan or Cobalt Blue

Papers

● A Mixed Media Paper Pad is great for beginners. Feel free to play with paper types. You can use watercolor paper, mixed media paper, or illustration board with gouache. By using these surfaces, you can ensure your paper doesn’t buckle when applying lots of water with your gouache. Heavier watercolor paper (140 lb/300 gsm or higher) is recommended to prevent buckling when applying large amounts of water with gouache. These options offer different textures and can differing absorption effects.

Brushes & Accessories

● Assortment of watercolor brushes (softer bristles) *For this workshop and exercises, you may want smaller brushes.

● Disposable palette paper for gouache and acrylic some people prefer: “wet disposable palette.” Metal or glass palettes can also be used.

● Small Palette Knife/Knives

● Large Jars/Cups - Used for water to clean brushes (feel free to use recycled jars)

● Rags: Cloth and/or Shop Paper Towels (Recycled old shirts etc...)

● Soap and/or Masters Brush Cleaner & Preserver

● Disposable Nitrile Gloves (Optional) If purchased, be sure they are nitrile gloves, not latex—nitrile is resistant to chemicals.
