Materials List:
My favorite spots for materials = Blick Art Supply and Make & Mend (2nd hand supplies Somerville)
You will need the following materials during the first class:
- 1 piece white paper
- 1 fluid acrylic soft body paint color
- 1 brush (painter’s flat head bristle brush 1.5” wide)
- Small plastic container for water
- 2 magazines
- Small paper scissors
- Palette knife (plastic, with diamond shaped head, for applying acrylic gel medium)
- Acrylic gel medium
- 1 pen, pencil or marker
During Class 1 we will review the syllabus, and demonstrate and discuss the materials below.
You will need the following for classes 2-8:
- A base material for your collages – this depends on how you like to work, and what you intend to do with
your creations. Options include:- a) spiral-bound multi-media pad of paper if you like to keep your work
journal style - b) wood boards or canvas boards if you plan on presenting your finished works [these do not
warp like paper will]; Yupo paper if you enjoy working with acrylic inks/paints
Lots of paper (white acid-free printer paper; the following are options for textural variety: rice paper, tracing
paper, journal pages, sheet music, ink paper that has a mild vellum quality...)
- a) spiral-bound multi-media pad of paper if you like to keep your work
- 1oz bottles Fluid soft body acrylic paints (Utrecht, Blick, Liquitex and some brand options). Colors are
personal preference; the most basic palette could include Black, White, Yellow Ochre, Burnt Sienna, and
your favorite accent color; for mixing all shades you would also include: Cadmium-free Medium Yellow,
Cadmium-free Medium Orange, Cadmium-free Medium Red or Alizarian Crimson; Ultramarine Blue,
Cerulean Blue, Cobalt Teal or Aquamarine, Quinacridone Magenta; - A 1-3 square bristle brushes, 1.5” wide... for quickly spreading a wash of acrylic paint
- At least 3 plastic pint containers for paint mixing
- Small brayer
- Gel block [size = your personal preference]
- Collection of image-rich magazines [gather from friends, free “bird-house” libraries on sidewalks all
around town, hair salons, Dr. offices, libraries often have a give-away magazine bin) - Pencil & Black Ball Point Pen
- Black Stabillo “All” pencil (water activated)
- White Uniball Signo gel pen
- Liquitex acrylic matte gel medium (adhesive) *if you are working on canvas with light papers, you
could use Blickrylic polymer gloss water-based adhesive - 2 Plastic palette knives
- 2 small paper-cutting scissors
- Painters tape
You have material EVERYWHERE ☺ Journals, letters, photos, newspaper articles, magazine articles ,books, children's’ books, magazines ... all of which you can use directly, photocopy, paint over, write over; rice paper applied over all of the above to give different texture, provide variety within a repeated pattern...Absolutely optional Acrylic Inks, Washi tape, Stickers, sturdy metal ruler (ideally with non-slip material on the back side), Scalpel & cutting mat (if you prefer this method vs. using scissors)
