SSSL - The Simplified Landscape (Studio School) - Jeremy During
The materials will be discussed thoroughly on our first day, as well as the mechanics of painting outdoors: how to pack, how to set up, how to choose a subject, etc. This will involve a demonstration of a number of different easels I’ve used over the years
Materials:
- Portable Easel
- Paint box
- Palette(wooden or butcher paper). It’s essential that this be portable, either held in the hand or attached to the easel
- Palette cup
- Palette Knife for both mixing and applying the paint
- Small container of Gamsol
- Small container of medium (half linseed half Gamsol) I’ve found the squeeze mustard bottles at the art store work perfectly
- Brushes: at least three #8 and three #6 with some smaller brushes of your choice. I prefer rounds and filberts personally, but the shape is a matter of personal preference.
- Sketchbook- for thumbnails and process work
- A few sticks of vine charcoal or graphite for drawing
- View catcher- grey plastic viewfinder-an essential tool in the field
- Rags or a roll of paper or blue shop towels (and a bag for dirty rags)
Paints - Required Colors:
- One warm and one cool of each primary color-this will lay the foundation of our palette
- Cool Yellow-lemon or Hansa
- Warm Yellow-Cadmium
- Cool red- alizarin crimson* or quinacridone
- Warm red- Cadmium or Windsor red
- Cool blue- french ultramarine*
- Warm blue-cerulean or Cobalt
- One large tube of Titanium White*
*ultramarine and crimson will be combined to make black
Paints - Suggested Colors:
- Greens- Terre Verte, Viridian, and Emerald
- King’s blue
- Cad yellow deep
- Naples or Nickel Yellow
- Anything else that catches your eye
Other Materials:
- Hat with Visor
- Suntan Lotion
- Snack and drink
- Painting supports
- 1 pad Arches oil paper 9 by 12 or 12 by 18 (or a similar disposable material such as Canson Canvapaper)-for thumbnails and process work
- 1 panel or Masonite to adhere paper to
- 1 roll masking tape
- Canvas or prepared panel-no smaller than 12 by 18, no larger than 18 by 24
