Class Supply List

WPIN - Watercolor and Pen & Ink Illustration - Dan Moynihan

Please bring pens, ink, and mixed-media paper to the first class meeting. I will discuss supplies further during the first class meeting. You may wait until later to purchase other supplies if you want. Feel free to email me if you have any questions.

Pen Holders and Nibs: At least two holders and a variety of nibs. I recommend getting a Speedball set (“sketching” or “cartooning” set) which includes holders and nibs. My favorite nib is the 513EF, but try a variety. Feel free to bring any other waterproof pens you have (Uniball, Micron, Sharpie, etc.).

Black Ink: Make sure it is waterproof! Speedball Super Black, Dr. Marten’s, etc.

Watercolor Paint: Buy small tubes. My color palette is based on having warm and cool shades of red, yellow, and blue, plus warm and cool greens. Feel free to bring any watercolor paints that you already have, or a minimum of one red, blue, and yellow. You can always add more colors as the course progresses.

Suggested Colors:

  • Cadmium Red
  • Alizarin Crimson
  • Cadmium Yellow
  • Lemon Yellow
  • Ultramarine Blue
  • Phthalo Blue
  • Sap Green
  • Phthalo Green

Brushes: Watercolor brushes that are round and pointed. Raphael and Cotman are good, affordable brands. At least one medium/large brush (size 10 or 12), one smaller (4 or 6), and one extra small (size 0). Don’t buy a cheapo value pack of brushes—the hairs will fall out in your painting, which is very annoying!

Mixed –Media Paper: A 9 x 12 pad is good for ink drawing and some light watercolor application.

Watercolor Paper: Cold press watercolor paper, 9 x 12. A pad or a block. I use Strathmore 400 series. Arches is very high quality and more versatile for painting, but also much more expensive.

Palette: Large plastic watercolor palette that has room to mix the paint but is small enough to be portable. The palette should have a cover, so you can save your paints and avoid getting paint on your things. For traveling to class, I use a leakproof Mijello brand palette.

Pencil: for sketching. I prefer a light pencil, 2H.

Eraser: Pink Pearl or whatever you prefer.
