Class Supply List

WSTS - Woodworking Skills: Tool Sharpening - Dan Paret

  • Please bring one new 1” wide chisel and one new card scraper. All sharpening materials will be supplied.
  • I generally recommend the Irwin/Marples blue handled chisel; Lee Valley has a nice set of chisels in the same price range. You need a full-sized bench chisel to take advantage of the grinding set-up- butt chisels are too short. I have not really seen a new card scraper that was not good enough to use- I particularly like the pair that Lie-Nielsen makes: one thin and one standard thickness- reasonably priced.
  • If you have chisels or scrapers that you purchased and attempted to sharpen, they qualify as new, but please do not expect to learn sharpening with tools you picked up at flea markets or online that need to be restored. I am happy to look at them with you, but the class will focus on preparing and sharpening new tools. Once you know how to prepare and sharpen edge tools, you will be ready to restore most tools. If you have plane irons that need sharpening, feel free to bring them as well.
