Chinese Reading and Conversation *Online*

This course assumes that students have completed at least 100 hours of Chinese class time, or eight terms at CCAE. It expects students to recognize many of the characters of Yong Ho’s two textbooks. It uses Pinyin infrequently and only for new vocabulary. It will assign students to read short stories from Graded Chinese Reader 500 words: Selected Abridged Chinese Contemporary Mini-stories (ISBN 978-7-5138-0345-8). The class time will be divided between reading passages aloud and learning relevant vocabulary usage and grammar points. More importantly, we will discuss the characters, the socioeconomic background, the cultural content, and presumptions embedded in the stories, so that students will not only be able to answer open-ended questions in the book, but also be able to make inferences and conclusions on their own. This term, we will read story #6 from page 53 – 64 and story #12 from page 135 – 144.
