Experimental Novels by Women *In-Person* *NEW*

While the "experimental novel" is often associated with the high modernists of the early 20th century, like Joyce, Proust, or Faulkner, this class explores the ways that women novelists have continually redefined the form from the early 19th century to the present. Jane Austen, Virginia Woolf, Toni Morrison, and Ali Smith form a matrilineage of revolutionary prose, both in form and in content. By tracing connections among seemingly disparate authors, we will identify techniques of experimentation that link the 19th-century domestic novel to contemporary postmodernism.
