"A Way You'll Never Be": The Nick Adams Stories of Ernest Hemingway *In-Person* *NEW*

More than any other character he created, Nick Adams was Hemingway's closest literary companion. From youth in northern Michigan, to adolescence and independence, to the battlefields of France, to damaged manhood, Nick retraced the life of his creator: a diffident alter ego to the egotistical original. The stories vary in length and tone, from sketch to memoir to confession. Although Hemingway sampled Nick's narrative throughout his career, we'll read them in the order Nick "lived" them, boy to man, remaining mindful of Hemingway's life and other writing at the time. Please borrow or purchase The Nick Adams Stories (Scribner), and read the first seven stories (pp. 13-58) for the first class.
