Geometric Patterns & Arabesque (Illumination) *In-Person*

“Illumination” describes the art of decorating manuscripts through the application of gold or silver giving the impression that the page had been literally illuminated. The repetitive, symmetrical, geometric patterns often make use of plant motifs, called “arabesque.” In Persian and Islamic art these patterns are often used to represent nature and objects through a more spiritual lens, not their physical and material qualities. Arabesque patterns are used in many forms of arts, like architecture, weaving, ceramics, woodworking, and book covers. In this course participants, with the guidance of the instructor and through in-class demonstration, will choose features to fashion their own piece of arabesque illumination.
