Korean: Beginner Level 2 *In-Person*

Korean belongs to the Ural-Altaic family of languages and is spoken by approximately 100 million people in South Korea, North Korea, China, Japan, and the US. Due to Korea’s increasing economic and political importance in North-East Asia, Korean is growing increasingly popular around the world as a foreign language. The “Korean Wave” has become an influential global phenomenon since the start of the 21st century, heavily impacting the contemporary cultures, music, film, and television industries, and behavioral aspects of various people throughout the world. This level is for students who have at least 13 hours of classroom time in Korean within the last year, can ask and answer simple questions in areas of immediate need in Korean, and can use simple phrases and sentences to describe where they live and the people they know. Following the guidelines of the Common European Framework of Reference, students at this level will learn to identify common words concerning their immediate concrete surroundings, read very simple sentences, ask and answer simple questions on very familiar topics, and write a short, simple note. Hyunyong was born and grew up in Seoul, South Korea until she moved to the U.S. The difference between two languages and cultures had been acquired for a third of her life. She will teach Korean in the class passionately based on her experiences. It is also very exciting for her to learn about other cultures, food, music and people from all over the world.
