Print the Legend: The Westerns of John Ford *In-Person* *NEW*
If the Western film is the American epic, John Ford is America's Homer. Myth can be as brutal as it is beguiling, and foundational myths have inspired artists for millennia. In John Ford's West, we face the sublime and the sinful, the heartless and the heartbreaking, set in a landscape as awesome and formidable as Mounts Olympus and Sinai. We'll follow the exploits of three iconic screen personas: Henry Fonda, James Stewart, and John Wayne over eight films in five classes, from "Stagecoach" (1939) to "Cheyenne Autumn" (1964). Specific attention to be paid to the director's art and craft. While brief clips will be played in class for discussion, students will watch the films on their own in preparation. Please see "Stagecoach" and "Cheyenne Autumn" for the first session. Other films to be assigned each week.
