Introduction to Erving Goffman *Online* *NEW*

Erving Goffman was a Canadian-born American sociologist, social psychologist, and writer, considered by some "the most influential American sociologist of the twentieth century". Goffman’s studies, specifically on face-to-face communication, rituals of social interaction, and stigmatization of the “other,” made essential contributions to two interdisciplinary fields: Performance Studies and Disability Studies. In this class, students will read and discuss selections from throughout Goffman's career and keep personal journals to note how his writing applies to their everyday lives. Optionally, students may draft and share a personal essay elaborating on their research for the final class.
