Nikolai Gogol's Peterburg Tales *Online* *NEW*

Nikolai Gogol was Russia's great comedic genius. In this course, we will study four of the funniest and/or weirdest tales of the cycle known as the Petersburg Tales, all written at about the same time and set in Russia's (then) capital city: “'Diary of a Madman,” “Nevsky Avenue,” “The Nose,” and “The Overcoat.”' These stories reflect the strain of Romanticism that originated in Germany with the writings of E.T.A. Hoffmann, epitomized by the literary modes of the fantastic and the grotesque, which will provide the framework for our study. They are also among the most beloved and famous works of Russian literature.
