HTDC - Wood Carving with Small Tools - Dan Paret
Wood Carving with Small Tools- Materials and Tools Tools:
-Set of seven Power Grip carving tools or similar. The seven tool set is the best value for excellent tools. The set includes 4 gouges (1/8” #11; 1/4” #8; 3/8” #3; 3/8” #5); one 5/16” skew chisel; one 5/16” straight chisel; one 1/4” V-tool. You can purchase similar tools of the same sizes and quality at a variety of suppliers, but they will cost more.
-The skew is a handed tool. The set comes with a right hand skew. If you are left handed you may be more comfortable using a left handed skew. Lee Valley and Hida sell a Power Grip left handed skew. McClains sells left handed skews.
-Non-slip mat (Con-Tact Beaded Grip Shelf Liner at Ace hardware works well)

I will demonstrate all carvings on 6” x 6” basswood- 3/8” or thicker. We can cut the pieces to 6” x 6” in class. You will need at least 6 pieces (6 x 6), but having a few more will give you enough for extra practice boards and projects. 12 would be a good number.
I have found that 3/4” boards remain flat- the thinner boards tend to cup over time. thinner boards will save you a little money, but flat boards will be more satisfying.
